What started out as a simple "get the guy with the map" kind of story in the first book, evolved (or devolved) into something about questioning the nature of existence, who we are and why we're here kind of stuff. And for that alone I'm dissapointed. Those kinds of questions have been asked and answered in other sci-fi and in physics' texts all over the world (and a few religious tomes). It was a little cliche to read the same thing rearing its head in this book, replete with the old chestnut of time travel and paradoxes.

Ho-hum. Still, the narrative reads very well. DeChancie has a style that is hard to beat. He is artistically accurate in his description and actions stemming from characters and environment. And he also injects a real wit into his characters that should have you laughing out loud as you read the book silently in public. The writing is that good.

But, like I say, it's the thematic material that actually brings the climax of this trilogy to a ho-hummish ending. In a sense it's almost telegraphed. Combine this with the number of characters that come to the fore near the end, and you got yourself one giant omelet or burrito to sift through, as all the ingredients are mixed in and begin to labor the reader.

But, for all that, I did enjoy the series overall. It was clever and inventive, and the notion of a "skyway" is very intriguing. When I first picked up the books way back when they were first published, I dismissed them as pablum; i.e. "Truckers in space? Pshaw.......", but the first two books really drew you into what I thought might be a simple thriller in space with a unique sci-fi background, but instead turned out to be a cosmological exploration in the "who are we" department. Oh well.

If you're reading the first two books, then pick up the third one, if for no other reason than to see how the whole thing ends.

Not a bad read as such, but I was hoping for something a little more "grounded", so to speak.

Give it a whirl.

Paradox Alley Skyway Book 3 eBook John DeChancie Reviews

A relatively weak end to an otherwise very good series of books. It seemed like the author just didn't have a creative way to end the story. He tied up the storyline but did so in a very predictable way.I don't want to give away much but everything they did in this book happened because they had already happened in the other timeline so they had to happen. But when you already know what occurred, there is little interest in watching these events happen.
This is a rollicking story of a trucker that travels an alien road that traverses planets as well as time. I first read this book which is one third of a trilogy back when it was originally published in paperback back in 1987. I kept remembering a story about a big rig and an alien road which kept bugging me until I finally took the time to hunt it up on the Internet and found had a kindle version of the entire trilogy.

There is a '57 Chevy with something more than a 283 under the hood that also conceals a Tasmanian Devil and a trucker that tries to help out a lady in distress. Along with several alien races he encounters a friendly Boojum on the road to nowhere and everywhere. Traveling the alien road is a lot of fun but shooting the portals along the way to get from one planet to the next suddenly becomes a crap shoot.

The story starts with the trucker Jake picking up a young lady that is hitchhiking. Every trucker knows this is a bad idea and the prettier the girl the worse the idea becomes. Darla is a real stunner. Jake's Dad, Sam who is also the autopilot in the truck advises against it but true to his nature Jake ignores his advice partly because Sam is dead but still piloting the truck.

Any fan of old fashioned scifi such as Heinlein's early works will enjoy this trilogy. Do start with the first book in the trilogy, Starrigger though and take them in order. Be sure you set aside enough time to read all three from start to finish because once you start you won't want to quit until you've finished the entire trilogy. You'll have a lot of fun along the way.
